Occupy Sesame Street

Like many people, PBS and I have a long history. Like most children who grew up in working class homes and didn’t have cable or many resources, my parents, grandmother and teachers understood that education was important and it needed to be mixed in with media we consumed.

I discovered some true treasures through PBS: Sesame Street, the Letter People, Reading Rainbow, MasterpieceĀ Theater, Doctor Who, Lambchop, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego, Ghost Writer, and many others.

When I was in college, I had the honor of volunteering for one of the PBS Telethons because I know what positive impact it makes in people’s lives, especially for many of us who came from a challenging background.

Which is why I’m both disgusted and horrified that a politician would threaten to cut the funding for PBS when its funding only constitutes of .012 percent and the rest is provided through private donations.

Levar Burton said it best, “I was raised by a woman whose philosophy it was to give her children the best education she could not afford. So there are places where you can cut. There are places where you need to cut. And there are places that you just donā€™t cut because it is not right.”

So in addition to fighting for women’s rights, the poor, racial oppression, the environment, LGBTQ rights, and the economy, I’ll be standing with President Obama because Mitt Romney has proven once again what he thinks of the 47 percent.

  1. Yeah, what the hell…? Even growing up in Canada I had access to PBS and I LOVED Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, although I went with CBC to watch Seaseme Street.

Oh, and Big Bird also had some words for Mitt rmoney while guest-starring on Saturday Night Live:

  2. Sesame Street is one of the shows that made PBS what it is. That and 3-2-1 Contact were shows that made learning entertaining without force-feeding info down our throats with sugar-coated patronizing involved.

  3. All of this and it’s also malicious. This isn’t about saving money or deficit – this is about culture change. This is about hoarding all the resources with the richest and saying “fuck you” to the rest. It’s about destroying anything that looks like “government assistance” or, gods forbid “SOCIALISM!!!! DUM DUM DUM!!!”

If it were about the deficit, Romney would have ignored PBS because it’s such a tiny part of the budget – as has been going round twitter:

“Cutting PBS support (0.012% of budget) to help balance the Federal budget is like deleting text files to make room on your 500Gig hard drive “
